Just another day in the Harem

“Harem”, probably you know what it is from its provocative status. Pronounced “Charem” both in Hebrew and Arabic it means “Forbidden”. Forbidden to whom you may well ask? Well, if you are a sultan and have a number of wives and conncubines, you wouldn’t let them¬†¬† roam around freely since your offspring would then have a good chance looking like other people’s DNA pattern. Not good for succsession of kings and sultans. There a religous reasons also for this but I’m not going into that, even if it is a part of both Judaism, and Islam.

The women had thir own quarters and were guarded they and their children. You can imagine the jealousy and fighting between 165 brothers and 43 wives!

New easy PERMANENT diffuser

On all my hookahs I always use a diffuser*.

*{A Diffuser in our case is an attatchment which breaks up the normal hookah hubbly bubbly bubbles made by indraw of breath on the hose and make them not only smaller, but it makes a lot less noise. Which is good if your wife or landlord are bothered.Worse if your parents hear!}

In previous posts I wrote some ideas like buying one,¬† or better, making your own. If you see the post under “Diffusers” you can see great photos of how they work in water, how to make, etc. I use 4 plastic bending straws stuck in the bottom of the shaft cut to size.Keep them a bit longer so that when inserted with the shaft, they will splay outward to 3,4 directions. The thing is, you need to either keep the same straws and take them out when cleaning the hookah (which I must do 2 days AGO!) or use new ones. I by chance came about a much better idea.You know, those flame lighters that are better to light a gas stove than a match and burn your fingers? I took the metal shaft off of one when the flint was worn down and even re-filling it was useless, and tried it on a mini hookah whose shaft was too short anyways in my opinion.The result was 2 more inches of metal shaft in the water, plus a built-in diffuser!!!

You will hopefully see in the below photos that at the end of the lighter shaft are¬† usually 3 or four holes, just as a rifle has at the end of its barrel to emit gas and then it won’t blow up from the force.The shaft from the lighter fit perfectly into the mini shaft. In the case of bigger hookahs since the shaft diameter is larger, you just bend the shaft which is tin easily.

Here you can see the holes at the end of the shaft, but this looks like a very sturdy, long lasting lighter-just buy a cheapie for our diffuser purpose :

(Has the holes @ the end).Do I have to explain where and how to stick this in the shaft? A child could do it!

The end connected to the plastic should be inserted into your hookah shaft¬† since the lighter side has the holes for diffusion.¬†Please, NO!

If you haven’t gotten the hint, I’m starving and its 5:13Am with nostores where I live in Israel between Hebron and Bethleham, but our local store opens at 7:20 and they have great chummus and fresh pita!
